The XBox One; will you go and buy it

When consoles first came out I was a fan. Well, if we go back to my beginnings it was on a TV console game (Pong and the like) back in the late 70’s I believe it was.

I progressed from that to an Atari 2600 which gave myself and my brother hours of fun. Pacman, Combat, Space Invaders just to name a few. When one game finished it was round to a mates to swap and let..

Following that though I moved on to a ZX81 and Commodore C64 which I loved and again had many many games. I didn’t venture back into consoles until the Sega Mastersystem which again was fantastic for its time BUT.. I found limiting compaired to a computer on which you can do more.

So, after the Mastersystem I went back into computers going through Atari ST, Amiga’s and into PC’s. I let many consoles pass me by until a number of years ago.

Just before the Xbox 360 came out I bought an older second hand Xbox and a PS2. I enjoyed the games still, playing less than on the computer but like the joypad for things like racing games.

I liked but not enough to get a Xbox360. That said though; a couple of years ago I finally decided to go for an Xbox 360 prompted by the Kinect. Now; again I don’t play enough myself but its great fun.

So; history aside and moving up to date we have now seen the Xbox One anounced. Will I get one? Certainly not on release. In fact, if my previous history carries forward it will be a few years till I move forward. Is the XBox 360 obsolite? Well no; I can still get old XBox games.

Personally I don’t believe is running out and jumping on the bandwagon straight away. However, if nobody did that the the console/technology would die before starting so I do thank those that do. However, remember that your old tech still works and if you don’t play do a hand me down to someone that would?Microsoft Confirms That The Xbox One Will Come With An Incredibly

Microsoft releases its Office 365 Home Premium and Office 2013 suite

Whats the difference between Office 365 and Office 2013? Well nothing in products; you still have the same word, power point, etc. Main difference is that one is subscription based at $100 a year and they other costs around $100.office 2013

OK; there are some fundamental differences. Firstly, Office 2013 can only be installed on 1 computer and from what I’ve read you can never install on any other computer after that. So you have to buy a new copy if get a new computer.

Office 365 can be installed on up to 5 devices; including windows pc’s, tables ad a Mac. It also has addition of free skype calls each month, more cloud storage, etc.

However, you are paying that $100 a year where as with Office 2013 its only the once so that is also a big fundamental difference. Would you like to pay subscription for office?

So that all said, is the new Office suite worth it? If using a touch screen then quite possibly (especially if using surface or other Windows based tablet) as you can use touch screen interface with the new Office.

However, even with the revamped interface I would personally say that unless going to use touch screen stay with your older version OR pick up 2010 which will no doubt be cheaper with the new one now on the shelves.

If you want to learn more then go and check out the Microsoft New Center.

So, will you be updating to the new Office 2013 or 365? Or will you be sticking with your current version or using LibreOffice? Please let us know your thoughts.

The next patch for Black Op’s 2 to include Dinosaurs?

COD-BO's2-Dinosaur

Apparently besides some fixes, nerfs, buffs and features in the next patch for Black Op’s 2, it will include Dinosaurs.

Treyarch’s David Vonderhaar has recently posted a small update on his Twitter account stating that  “Still at work doing that final grind on the next update. It’s a big one. Nerfs. Buffs. Bug fixes. Features. Dinosaurs. Details to come.”

So could this be some type of new Survival mode? Who knows, but at least we’re going to get a gametype that features Dinosaurs, before DICE managed to include them in Battlefield 3.

Is this the first Gaming Tablet? – a new Gaming tablet from Razer

Razer from Razerzone.com are now listing what they claim to be the worlds first tablet designed for PC gamers. The Razer Edge Pro is a razer-edge-usp2-bnew tablet build using Intel chips and running Windows 8 that is really aimed at getting PC gamers onto a Tablet.

Running a 3rd generation Intel Core i5 this should give it some good processing power to handle the tasks at had, coupled with a nVidia GeForce graphics series card with Optimus technology (sie says its a nVidia GT 640M LE with 1GB DDR3). Display is a 10.1″ high definition multi-touch IPS display capable of 1366×768 – so should be able to handle 720p. But what about memory and storage, well specs say it will have 4GB of DDR3 and a 65GB SSD.

There are extras you can buy for it including keyboard, docking station where you can plug in things like joypads and an unusual gamepad controler that the entire tablet fits into with handles either side with a small joypad and buttons. This alone will make it a great tool for portable windows game playing (kind of like a portable Steam game console – see yesterday story for a reference on that console). Priced on there site at the moment at $999 or an Intel Core i7 version (comes with 8GB ram) also listed at $1299.99 its on the most expensive side of table prices. And with a note saying that accessories including Gamepad controllers  Keyboard dock etc being sold separate this maybe priced too high for your average gamers?razer-edge-mobile-console-mode-a

Still, this looks very interesting; though time will tell if it sells or not.

New games console hardware shown off by Valve at CES

Valve, the video game makers, have unveiled  a PC designed for users to play Steam games on their TV’s.valve console

This modular PC system is developed by Xi3 Corporation and funded by Valve. It was being show off at the CES trade show in Las Vegas.

The set-top box will allow users to access thousands of gaming titles through an integrated system, a statement said.

“Today marks the beginning of a new era for Xi3,” said Jason Sullivan, founder and chief executive of Xi3, in a statement.

“This new development stage product will allow users to take full-advantage of their large high-definition TV displays for an amazing computer game experience,” he added.

“As a result, this new system could provide access to thousands of gaming titles through an integrated system that exceeds the capabilities of leading game consoles, but can fit in the palm of your hand.”

Currently though no news of the internal hardware has been given even though currently showing this off. Other system supplied by Xi3  are based around dual core Intel CPU’s and SSD.

I’m a big fan of Valve type software as it removes the need for physical media. but I am a bit unsure about a console myself as I like using keyboard and mouse. What do you think?

Ubuntu OS comes to smart phones

News is out that the Ubuntu operating system has been adapted for smart phones.ubuntu phone

For those that don’t know what Ubuntu is; its an operating system based on the Linux OS; the Debian version of Linux to be a little more precise.

Some may wander what that is and why and if will work etc. Those of us that run Android already have an introduction to Linux on our phones though as Android is based on Linux kernel so its not that alien to phones in reality.

What benefits can this give us? Well, it would seem that there is an aim to extend what the phone will be able to do. For example, one bit of info says that a user will be able to run desktop apps while your phone is plugged into a monitor doubling for a desktop PC.

So, the aim for this OS is to give you a phone that you can plug into monitors, use as a desktop then pick up and take with you.

Initial release of the Ubuntu system will be available to install on the Samsung’s Galaxy Nexus phone replacing the Android system.

We can only wait and see if this takes up; although in my opinion the thought is a good one if we can have enough power in the phone to run our desktop systems.

Sony starts the new year by dropping a classic – the PS2

Sony have started the new year with cutting the production of its PS2. Since 2000 this has been one of Sony’s best selling consoles and has had many of the best games produced running on it (in my opinion). I can remember seeing Gran Turismo 3 and then 4 as well as many of the Need for Speed titles.playstation 2

So popular was the PS2 that is still out sold the PS3 for the first 3 years of the PS3’s release; a great testament to the PS2. By ending the production it has spurred rumors that it is putting its manufacturing resources towards a PS4, although remember that at the moment this is just a rumor.

Although Sony is ending production of the PS2 console it doesn’t mean that game production will cease; as an example another installment of the Final Fantasy series is due in March 2013.

So, join me in wish a Bonn Voyage to a true classic.
